At 10:00 am Pacific time on February 18, 2014 the Sun moved into the sign of Pisces.  This signals the last stage of winter in the northern hemisphere and a time when the last vestiges of seasons’ past will disappear into the pregnant void or ocean of all possibilities.  The grip of winter will begin to loosen, albeit slowly for some.  More sunshine is spreading across the lands and oceans.  It is a time of uncertainty, where forgotten dreams are remembered and forgotten once again.

Symbol for Pisces

Dane Rudhyar writes about Pisces in “Astrological Signs the Pulse of Life” as, “Transcendence, overcoming, piercing through illusions and false security, severance of social ties, embarking for the great adventure with utter faith and in denuded simplicity of being.”  In other words, the intent of Pisces is about transcendence from the illusions of reality and attachments and being in a heart-place of simplicity and ready to allow the Universe to guide you to your next steps.

In Shamanic Astrology, the Sun represents the “fuel you burn to reach your life purpose.”  So Pisces energy in this month becomes something that invigorates the the blood, not in the same way a fire sign would, but more from a place of the heart and the emotional body, but more spiritually-oriented than say from Cancer or Scorpio.   For those experiencing a solar return (having a birthday) between Feb 18th and the morning of March 20th (spring equinox), this time can be especially sensitive with both Chiron (mid -degrees) and Neptune (early degrees) situated in the sign of Pisces.  During this Piscean month, a New Moon occurs at midnight on March 1st at 10 degrees Pisces, right between Chiron and Neptune.  For those who have any personal planets/points (Pisces Moon, Sun, Mars, Venus, Ascendant, Midheaven, Jupiter) that day can be a day to honor a new way of being Pisces, expressed in this middle world (Earth).  It can be a day to detach from the old story of the past, to shed the trappings of unhealthy vices, addictions and meditate on spirit and love.  A person doesn’t have to have Pisces to honor themselves for this is solar passage in which we all can participate.

Further defining Pisces in Shamanic Astrology is its modality as “In Service to Spirit” (aka “mutable” in traditional western astrology).  This means it is one of four signs that operate in serving spirit (God, the Universe, Great Mystery) and that their underlying archetypal energy’s purpose is in being able to honor spirit in some form or another.  For Pisces, it is about a transpersonal love of others, life and all (and without ego), be of selfless service to others, to heal without attachment to the outcome, and being able to provide a safe space to others.  Of course, that is the intent and the “healthy” orientation of this sign.  The “shadow” expression of Pisces can be prone to escapism from reality, loss of identity in relationship and a lack of understanding the significance of responsibility.  Pisces operates from a Celestial World (or Upper World) point of view and that mode of operation works on a non-linear scale, which can be exceedingly difficult to fit into and become a part of the routine, day-to-day, action-oriented western culture.

One of the roles Pisces has in this realm is to show our connection to other levels of existence, to show that this “consensus reality” is only a part of our journey on this plane of existence and that left-brain, logical and rational way of being is the only way to be.  In fact, it is a natural part that has mostly been cutoff in modern society.  The role of Pisces has been misunderstood for many centuries but there is an awakening happening that is slowly recognizing the importance of the authentic Piscean archetype.

In humanity, we are at a point now where our own transcendence into a new level of consciousness is beginning to manifest itself.  As each year goes by, we see the transformation taking shape.  So, in this Solar Month of Pisces, we can take an opportunity to recognize how we can best contribute to this world?  How can we utilize our heart in our actions and creations?  What were our dreams of long ago?  How can they benefit us now?  In this Piscean month, it is time to see the field or pregnant void of all possibilities and share our dreams without attachment but with heart.
